Configure Twinkly for the first time

Just plug Twinkly into the power supply to switch on.

The round button on the controller allows you to swipe through a gallery of pre-set effects but to switch on the magic and make your decoration really Smart, you need to download the Twinkly app for tablets and smartphones.

That way you can connect Twinkly to your smartphone, manage effects, design new ones and much more!


Configuring Twinkly
To configure Twinkly for the first time, follow this guided procedure.

You don’t need to connect to the local Wi-Fi network to use Twinkly, but it is a good idea to do so, then you can use all the functions that make Twinkly truly special.

Check that you have access to the mobile network and local Wi-Fi network on your smartphone. (This isn’t strictly necessary for using Twinkly, but it is handy for accessing the complete set of functions).

Make sure you have your local Wi-Fi network password handy.

 

Download the mobile app
The app is available on the AppStore and Google Play Store. Minimum requirements for using the Twinkly app are:

  • For iOS devices: iOS 10 or later
  • For Android devices: Android 4.4 or later Please note that No Twinkly app version is currently available for Windows devices.If you have already downloaded the Twinkly app, make sure you have the latest update! We update the app regularly so your experience is even more amazing!

 

Set up your lights and switch on your Twinkly
Set up your Twinkly as you prefer. Make sure that most of your LEDs are visible to get the best out of your smart decoration.
Plug Twinkly into the power supply and switch on.
A green and blue light on the controller will come on. This tells you that both lights are working.
Wait about 10 seconds for the green light to stay on permanently.

 

Connect Twinkly directly to your smartphone via its Wi-Fi network
Each Twinkly device can develop its own Wi-Fi signal that allows it to talk to your smartphone.
Check that Wi-Fi networks are activated on your smartphone.
Scroll down through the list and select the network emitted by your Twinkly device, showing as “Twinkly_XXXXXX”.

 

Rename your Twinkly
Congratulations! Twinkly is now connected to your smartphone!
To make things easier, you can rename your Twinkly now. If you add others over time you can identify them easily.
To manage more than one Twinkly from the same smartphone you need to link them to a local Wi-Fi network.

 

Connect your Twinkly to your local Wi-Fi network.
Twinkly is now connected to your smartphone via its own Wi-Fi network.
Clicking on “Connect to your local network” means you can connect Twinkly to your local network to make things easier (you can use Twinkly and access the network at the same time and you won’t have to repeat the Wi-Fi change operations again).
What’s more, when Twinkly is connected to the Wi-Fi network, you can create Twinkly groups and control Twinkly remotely using devices like Google Home.


Select the device
Open the Twinkly app, access the Menu > Devices, and select your Twinkly.
Clicking on “Twinkly_XXXXXX” you can see that you Network is actually named “Direct”If you can’t see any Twinkly in the list, please verify to be directly connected to your Twinkly network from the Wi-Fi settings menu of your smartphone.


Scan for available networks and connect to your favorite one

Click on “Network: Direct”
The app will scan for the available local Wi-Fi networks.
Select the one you want to connect your Twinkly at.
Type the password and click on: “Connect”.

Please note that this process may take up to 30 seconds.
    

Congratulations!
Your Twinkly is now linked to your local Wi-Fi network.
A continuous blue light will switch on on the controller.  


Directly connect to your Twinkly

Each Twinkly device can develop its own Wi-Fi signal that allows it to talk to your smartphone.

Check that Wi-Fi networks are activated on your smartphone.

  1. Go to your smartphone Wi-Fi settings
    Check the list of available local Wi-Fi networks.
    Scroll down through the list and select the network emitted by your Twinkly device, showing as “Twinkly_XXXXXX”.
    That’s your Twinkly! Select this network and wait until the connection is established.
  2. Open the Twinkly app
    Now the Twinkly app can find your Twinkly.
    Access the effects gallery to try them all! Edit the pre-set effects or create new effects from scratch.

In this moment you have a Direct connection between your smartphone and your Twinkly.

In Menu > Devices > Twinkly_XXXXXX > Network: the network is named as “Direct”.

On the controller you can see a steady, green light on.

What could you do with a direct connection to Twinkly?

  • Apply Effects
    you can apply, edit and create new effects.
  • Mapping your LEDs
    Once placed the lights on your tree, access the “Layout” menu to create new layouts through the mapping. This procedure allows the app to understand where the LEDs are located and give the right input to the lights to get perfect effects on custom shapes.
  • Rename your Twinkly
    To make things easier, you can rename your Twinkly now. If you add others over time you can identify them easily.

To manage more than one Twinkly from the same smartphone, to access internet while using Twinkly, you need to link them to a local Wi-Fi network.

What’s more, when Twinkly is connected to the Wi-Fi network, you can create Twinkly groups and control Twinkly remotely using devices like Google Home.

When Twinkly is connected to the Wi-Fi network, you can create Twinkly groups and control Twinkly remotely using devices like Google Home.

Please be sure you already have a Direct Connection with your Twinkly.

  1. Select the device
    Open the Twinkly app, access the Menu > Devices, and select your Twinkly.
    Clicking on “Twinkly_XXXXXX” you can see that your Network is actually named “Direct”If you can’t see any Twinkly in the list, please verify to be directly connected to your Twinkly network from the Wi-Fi settings menu of your smartphone.
  2. Scan for available networks and connect to your favorite one
    Click on “Network: Direct”
    The app will scan for the available local Wi-Fi networks.
    Select the one you want to connect your Twinkly at.
    Type the password and click on “Connect”.This process may take up to 30 seconds.
  3. Congrats!
    Your Twinkly is now connected to your local Wi-Fi network.
    Please check to be connected with your smartphone to the same local Wi-Fi network.

The direct connection between your Twinkly and your Smartphone is now over.
The Twinkly_XXXXXX Wi-Fi network is no more available in your smartphone Wi-Fi lists.
On the controller now you can see two steady lights on, one green and one blue.

Is very important that your smartphone is connected to the same Wi-Fi network you choose for your Twinkly.

You can easily verify on which network Twinkly actually is connected from the Menu > Devices > Twinkly_XXXXXX > Network.

To manage more than Twinkly from the same smartphone repeat the entire configuration procedure: Directly connect the new Twinkly to your smartphone, then connect the new twinkly to the same local Wi-Fi Network.

Apply an effect
Get to know how to apply effects to your Twinkly!

  • Pre-set effects
    To access the gallery of the preinstalled effects, just connect Twinkly to a power socket and repeatedly press the central button on the controller.
  • Gallery of effects
    On the Twinkly app, you’ll find a gallery of effects for each product. We created them to be immediately applied, saved as favourite and modified.

To make the most of your smart decoration, connect Twinkly to your smartphone.
Remember: to apply group effects to more than a Twinkly, first create a group of Twinkly.

Open the gallery
Once Twinkly has been set up on your smartphone, with a direct connection or with a connection to your local Wi-Fi open the gallery section on your app.

Did you set up more than a Twinkly on your smartphone?
Decide on which Twinkly or Twinkly group apply the effect selecting it on the menu “Device”.

Effect Preview
Select one of the effects to see the full screen layout and see the preview in action on your Twinkly.

Click on the heart-shaped icon to add the effect to your favourites and have quick access to the selected effects later on.
Is there any music around you? Click on the musical note icon and adapt the rhythm of the effect to that of your music.


Edit a pre-set Effect

The effects in the Twinkly gallery can be edited according to your taste and creativity, and here’s where all the fun lies!
For each product there are different basic effects available, from which your personalization can start.

  1. Choose the Twinkly product or group of products to which you want to apply the effect from the “Device” menu.
  2. Select and apply a starting effect.
  3. Click on “Edit” to start. A window will open, showing all the available options for the personalization.

Editing Options
The first option changes according to the chosen product and effect. It might be used to modify the number of colored spirals and bands.
The second option allows you to modify the effect’s speed: from slow to super fast!
The third option allows you to change color: there are preselected colors available for each effect, scroll through them left and right and select your favourite!

Editing Colours
Not finding the right color? Create yours! Choose the perfect color from 16 million colors clicking on the icon “+”
Moving your finger on the colors palette, you’ll be able to create your perfect mix and save the color among the existing ones, ready to be applied on your effect!


Create a Static Effect

With Twinkly you can free your creativity creating new effects!

Effects could be Static Effects or Loop Effects.

Create a custom static effect

  1. Select the device for which you want to create a new effect.
  2. Access the Gallery Effect.
  3. Click on the icon “+” on the top right of the page or on the icon at the end of the gallery.
  4. To create a static effect click on “Static Effect”.

Select the Color
First, select the color you want to apply: move the cursor “color” left and right to select the right color.

Select the tool
Choose the tool you want to use to draw the effect on your basic layout / layout, being it basic or mapped by you.

  • Pencil: for a subtle and light stroke, it allows you to select just a few LED lights at a time and apply a full color.
  • Brush: for a thicker stroke, it allows you to select more LED lights at a time and apply a full color.
  • Magic Wand: It applies to the selected LEDs a trembling effect, that will remind you of fairy dust.
  • Rubber: it erases the effect from the LEDs that you’ll touch.

Apply or erase the color with the selected tool
Once selected the tool, touch the LEDs on which you want to intervene.
You can select single LEDs or work on groups moving your finger on the screen.

Click on “Save” to save the effect and give it a name, your effect will be available in the main gallery, from where you’ll be able to add it to your favourites.
Note: personal effects cannot be modified from the gallery like the preinstalled ones.


Create a Loop Effect

With Twinkly you can create wonderful animations for your decorations!

Create a custom Loop Effect

  1. Select the device for which you want to create a new effect.
  2. Access the Gallery Effect.
  3. Click on the icon “+” on the top right of the page or on the icon at the end of the gallery.
  4. To create a dynamic effect click on “Loop Effect”.

Differently from the static effects the dynamic ones involve different LEDs at different times, so you’ll be able to control the time option as well. Its indicator is on the top right of the screen and indicates the total time of “execution” of the effect.

Select the Color
First, select the color you want to apply: move the cursor “color” left and right to select the right color.

Choose the tool you want to use to draw the effect on your basic layout / layout, being it basic or mapped by you.

Observe the color you applied appearing and disappearing on the layout according to the movement of the “time” indicator.
The “time” indicator goes on turning to give you the chance of adding a new color on a new selection of led lights at the right moment.

Select a new color and a new tool. Wait for the right moment to come and add the LEDs you want to add.
Click on “Save” to save the effect and give it a name, your effect will be available in the main gallery, from where you’ll be able to add it to your favourites.


Map your Lights

If you are installing a string of lights, this procedure allows the app to identify and map the LEDs within the space.
This way, you can apply advanced effects on your smart decoration.

If you are installing a Pre-lit Tree, mapping lets you apply the most stunning effects especially designed for this product.

This step is not necessary if you are installing Twinkly Figures, Wall/Curtain/Icicles, Pre-lit Decors, or Cones.

Note: installing extensions.
Some products are set up for physical add-on extensions so you can have more lights. If you are asked, state if you have extensions or not.
You can always modify this setting later.

  1. Map Lights
    Click on Menu > Layouts > Map Lights and accept, giving the app permission to access your smartphone camera.
  2. Set up the shot
    Focus your smartphone camera on the LED. Hold the frame steady.Tips for perfect mapping:
    -Make sure there is no light reflected from windows, mirrored surfaces, shiny floors or other reflective objects nearby.
    – Lower the surrounding lights for stronger contrast between the LED and ambient lighting, making it easier for the app to pick out the LED.
    – Avoid spaces that are too dark. In the dark the smartphone camera may detect a haze around the LED which makes it difficult to map individual LED.
  3. Launch Mapping
    The LEDs will start flashing quickly. The magic has begun!
  4. The LED on your Twinkly are now mapped!

Now your smartphone has a map of your Twinkly’s LED positions in the space.
This step is essential for start experimenting with truly amazing effects!


Apply an effect to a custom layout

Products like led string lights can be arranged in the setting as you wish: you can use them to decorate your Christmas tree or other objects; in such cases you need to set up the Mapping, so that the Twinkly app can recognize how they’ve been arranged in the surroundings, allowing you to apply the effects on your creation.

  • Arrange the LEDs and click on “Start Mapping” For more info, check the section Mapping on this guide.
  • Mapping the LEDs after having arranged them in the surroundings will change the way they are shown in the gallery section.
  • It will show a new scheme, represeting the real arrangements of the led lights in the surroundings.

Link more than one Twinkly to the local network

Do you have more than one Twinkly?

Follow both the steps of the guided procedure for each Twinkly you want to manage.

  1. Direct Connect Twinkly to your smartphone
  2. Connect your Twinkly to the local Wi-Fi network

Ensure that you always connect your Twinkly to the same local Wi-Fi networks so you can manage them together and create groups.

Create a Group – Join and Sync

Creating a group of Twinkly allows you to extend the number of led lights to which apply the same effect.

To create a group of Twinkly, you need to connect each Twinkly to the local Wi-Fi through the Twinkly mobile app.

Add all of yours Twinkly to the same network

Follow both the steps of the guided procedure for each Twinkly you want to manage.

  1. Direct Connect Twinkly to your smartphone
  2. Connect your Twinkly to the local Wi-Fi network

Ensure that you always connect your Twinkly to the same local Wi-Fi networks so you can manage them together and create groups.

Creating a group 

Open the app and open the “Devices” menu
Click on “Create Group”

Give your group a name
The app will ask you to add the group’s name, which will be useful to distinguish them later on.
Give them the name you prefer, it might be the name of the setting, like “Sitting room” or “Outdoors”, or of a decoration, like “Big tree”

Choose to create a Join Group or a Sync Group

Join Groups make your different Twinkly act like a great big Twinkly, meaning:

  • They extend the number of available lights up to the sum of led lights on each Twinkly
  • They have a group layout
  • They can be mapped as a single device
  • Once you’ll have mapped all your led lights in your group, you’ll be able to apply basic and advanced effects to it.
  • One of the most frequent ways Join Groups are used, are as led lights on on a single tree.

Sync Groups allow the simultaneous application of the effects on all the Twinkly that are part of the group.

  • They extend the number of available lights up to the sum of led lights on each Twinkly.
  • Each Twinkly keeps its basic layout, even if it has been mapped.
  • Sync Groups cannot be mapped as a single device.

Important! You can create a Sync Group only among Twinkly with the same number of led lights.

Now you know it all! Free your fantasy to create amazing group effects!


Connect Twinkly to Google Assistant

To remote control Twinkly and through voice commands, your Twinkly should be connected the Google Assistant app.

Google Assistant is a smartphone app available on the AppStore and Google Play Store.

Connecting the lights to Google Assistant allows you to control Twinkly through voice commands from your smartphone and through Google Smart Home devices.

Prerequisites

To begin with, you need to download the Twinkly app and follow these 2 steps:

  1. Directly connect to your Twinkly
  2. Connect Twinkly to a local Wi-Fi Network

Download the Google Assistant app and follow the guided procedure to configure it.

Please verify:

  • You installed on Twinkly the latest version of firmware available.
  • Your Google Smart Home device (if available) is running and connected to the same local Wi-Fi network of your Twinkly.
  • The local Wi-Fi network properly access internet resources.
  •  Your smartphone is connected to the same local Wi-Fi network of your Twinkly and of your Google Smart home device (if available).

 

Create a Twinkly account

  1. Open your Twinkly app
  2. From the main menu, open the “Account” section and register/login

 

Add Twinkly to your Google Assistant

  1. Open your Google Assistant app
  2. Click on the compass-shaped icon on the top right corner
  3. Click on the icon with three bullet points on the top right corner
  4. Click on Settings
  5. Scroll down to the “Services” section and click on “Domestic Control” (iOS Devices/ “Home Control” (Android devices))
  6. Click on the “+” button on the bottom right corner
  7. Scroll the list of available apps to find “Twinkly” and select it.
  8. Log In with the same credentials of your Twinkly account (if you accessed through social login, be sure to access it with the same user).
  9. In the list of elements available you can see Twinkly and the effects.
  10. you can choose whether or not assign your Twinkly to a room.

 

Voice command Twinkly

Ask Google Assistant to synchronize effects typing or voice command: synchronize devices.
This is necessary the first time you use it or every time you add new lights, remove lights, or your network settings change.

List of commands available by now

Turn on / off all the lights or just one light. IE:

  • Turn the lights on (or off)
  • Turn the garland on (or off)
  • Turn String 225 on (or off)

Ask google to check if one or all the lights are on or off. IE:

  • Is the garland on?
  • Are my lights off?

Activate effects. IE:

  • Activate Collision
  • Activate Rainbow
  • Activate Snake
  • Activate Twinkle
  • Activate Waves
  • Activate Movie will play the current custom effect you saved on your Twinkly device

 

Remember: Twinkly will be managed like any other smart light in your house, be sure to manage at best the partition in rooms and settings.

 


Reset your Twinkly

The Reset procedure is useful to take back Twinkly to factory default conditions, for the following cases in particular:

  • If you want to install Twinkly on a new local Wi-Fi network.
  • If there are ongoing connection problems between Twinkly and the local Wi-Fi.

The process is extremly easy:

  1. Unplug Twinkly from the power socket
  2. Press the button on the controller and plug Twinkly back in the power socket
  3. Keep pressing the button until the lights will be steady and red.

Twinkly is now back to factory defaults!
